The Myth-Buster Collection: twelve sentences to forget

This collection is the condensed version of the site's myth-busting articles: twelve sentences you hear day in, day out – and every single one of them can cost money to anyone who believes them. Each comes with the fact, and a link to the article that spells out the detail. Send it to anyone you'd like to save from these myths.

In short:
  • The myths fall into three families: “I don't need it” (skip-it myths), “it's covered anyway” (over-estimation myths), and “they won't pay out anyway” (distrust myths).
  • The antidote is the same for all three families: knowing your own policy wording – not general hearsay.
  • For the detailed versions: basic myths and cancellation cover myths.

The “I don't need it” family

1. “I don't need it in Europe, I've got the EHIC.” – The EHIC is valuable, but it doesn't give you private care, medical repatriation, baggage cover or cancellation cover (EHIC article). 2. “It's pointless for two days.” – Risk isn't a function of trip length (city break article). 3. “I'm young and healthy.” – Accidents and theft aren't a question of age. 4. “It comes with my bank card, that's enough.” – It might be enough; without knowing the terms, it's just a hope (bank card article).

The “it's covered anyway” family

5. “Cancellation cover pays out for anything.” – It pays for named, evidenced reasons (the official-report principle). 6. “Skiing is included in the base package.” – Typically you need an add-on (skiing article). 7. “Baggage cover reimburses everything at replacement value.” – Sub-limits and depreciation apply (baggage cover article). 8. “If my flight's cancelled, my insurer's got it covered.” – That's primarily a passenger-rights matter for the airline (delay cover article). 9. “If war breaks out, cancellation cover refunds me.” – A region on the not-recommended list is an exclusion, not a cancellation reason (the list article).

The “they won't pay out anyway” family

10. “The insurer always finds a loophole.” – The vast majority of well-documented, rule-following claims are paid without issue; rejections tend to trace back to recurring, avoidable causes (rejection reasons article). 11. “If something goes wrong, I'm on my own anyway.” – The assistance hotline arranges things, and pays in line with the policy terms; and if a case gets stuck, the broker steps in to help, where possible (disputed claims article). 12. “It's so complicated I'll never understand it.” – Understanding how it works takes half an hour of reading (the quick-start guide) – or a 20-minute conversation: here.

What do they teach together?

The common denominator of all twelve myths is that they all feed on uncertainty: anyone who doesn't know their own cover either underestimates or overestimates it. The site's knowledge base exists to dismantle exactly that uncertainty – article by article, without scaremongering or sugar-coating. You're in the right place: start with the basics.

Frequently asked questions on this topic

Which myth causes the biggest losses?
In practice, it's skipping sports cover (“it's included in the base package”) and missing the cancellation-cover time window – both tend to bite precisely on the largest claims. The shared antidote: two mindful minutes when you take out the policy.

What should I say to a friend who “never buys insurance”?
Don't scare them – just ask how large a hospital bill abroad they'd happily pay out of pocket. The answer usually gets them thinking; for the rest, this site is here, article by article.
